How this guide evaluates equipment
This is a specification comparison and safety checklist, not a hands-on product test.
We compared welfare guidance with the kinds of dimensions and configurations published by an exercise-pen manufacturer. We did not buy, assemble, or load-test a product, and we do not rank a brand. Manufacturer pages establish only what a model claims to include; they do not prove suitability for every rabbit. Before buying, verify the current panel height, spacing, door geometry, included clips, indoor anchoring options, finish, and total usable area in the exact shape you plan.
Compare the pen as a complete setup
Panel count alone does not tell you the floor area, stability, or escape risk.
Draw the planned shape to scale and subtract space taken by litter boxes, hides, and bowls. Select a height for the individual rabbit's jumping and climbing behavior, then inspect horizontal bars and gaps that might support climbing or trap a small rabbit. The gate should open without creating a pinch point and latch against accidental movement. Indoors, secure the pen so pushing or leaning cannot fold panels or slide the entire boundary across the floor.

Choose flooring for traction and inspection
The floor system should protect feet and property without introducing a chewing or slipping hazard.
Start with a waterproof layer only where the household floor needs it, then add a stable, non-slip surface that covers the full movement area. A washable mat, low-pile rug, fleece system, or suitable sheet material may work depending on the rabbit, but no material is automatically chew-safe. Avoid exposed wire, abrasive seams, curling corners, and loose threads. Test traction while the surface is dry, and replace it if urine, cleaning, or chewing prevents reliable inspection.
Inspect after assembly and keep inspecting
A safe specification can become unsafe through assembly choices, wear, or a change in behavior.
Run a hand along every edge and joint, confirm all clips and latches, and watch the rabbit's first sessions closely. Remove furniture that creates a launch point near the boundary. Recheck for widened gaps, bent wires, sharp coating damage, sliding panels, chewed flooring, and trapped moisture. Stop using an item when damage creates an injury or escape risk. A pen is one part of a habitat; it does not replace enrichment, social needs, or room to move.
Questions owners ask
What pen height is best for a rabbit?
There is no universal height. Compare the rabbit's size, jumping and climbing behavior, nearby launch points, bar layout, and the manufacturer's current dimensions.
Can an exercise pen sit directly on tile?
Smooth tile may not provide dependable traction. Add a stable, solid, non-slip layer and confirm that edges, seams, and chewing do not introduce another hazard.
Does a rabbit pen need to be anchored indoors?
It must remain stable when the rabbit pushes, runs, or leans on it. The appropriate wall connection or indoor support depends on the pen and room layout.
